Default Foundation/Powder tips?

Ok, well I recently purchased Loreal Bare Minerals, because all of my friends kept telling me how great it was. And their skin looks perfect and smooth.
So..I was pretty happy when I bought it! But I think I'm doing something wrong, because after I'm done applying it, my face doesn't look smooth. You can really tell that I put it on.
I don't think I'm putting too much on my face, I really don't. I just think there's something wrong with my application.
I think it's because I don't apply that much foundation underneath...I just dab like a smaller-than-a-dime size amount on my face, and you can't really tell.
Every time I go to buy makeup, I get so frustrated, because I don't know which one will work best for me, and I don't want to waste my money on something that doesn't work.
I've tried so hard taking care of my skin; I wash it, cleanse it, exfoliate it. The thing is, my skin gets dry around my cheeks and forehead, but my nose area gets oily after a while.
Tips?
