Default tips please on brushing long hair cats?

I adopted woody in may from cats protection he's a long hair ginger tabby with 3 legs (accident involving a car apparently).

I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep his fur neat cos he totally hates being brushed, and I'm not sure what to do to get him to accept it.
It's got to the point where no matter how I try to brush him he goes 'mental' just seeing the brush and gets ready to either run or attack.
Any tips /advice on how I can get him to accept being brushed would be a huge help 'cos I don't want his fur to get matted.
thanx!!

why dont you get one of those cat hair brushes you put over your hand.then he will think you are stroking him.some cats have sensitive skin and some brushes hurt them.if he is long haired you have to do it as often as you can otherwise it will go into knots and tufts then youll never get it brushed

Buy a different brush that he does not recognise and start to do a little bit each day, but stop when the cat gets annoyed. Do it really lightly (even if its not actually doing much brushing!) to start with, until he thinks its like being stroked and he will like it, then over days/couple of weeks get firmer. I always hold the top of the fur when trying to pull the brush through a tough knot as this releases the pressure where the fur is attached/pulling to his body!

Try not to get angry with your fluffy cat. I had a fluffy kitten who didn't like a brush and my mum looked after him for 4 weeks and it ran away because she tried brushing it every time she went near it

Good Luck

have you tried a grooming mitt? Its a glove with a brush type attachment on the palm so your cat thinks it is just being stroked:

Or this might work:

Use a damp brush, it helps to cut through the lugs easier keep the moggy clean at all times and give it plenty of TLC,more so when brushing ittakes a bit of time for it to grt used to it but please keep at it.

hi i have to Persian cats both long haired one hates to be brushed the other don't mind. what i do is kneel on the floor on a carpet and put him between my legs, head facing away from me. then i just brush his front ,legs and back. i think he fills more safe when he is between my legs. the other one i do the same, but she is more difficult. she does get a lot of knots so i have a dog shaver and i just shave the knots out she don't seem to mind it. best to brush them every day even twice best of luck.
