I've tried many tricks, none of them work all of the time.
Deer run in pairs or herds and they are dumb. They don't remember if they like that plant that they tried yesterday so they nibble again and so do their friends. Advice from our local nursery manager: Change their eating patterns.
Repeated nibbling can damage the plants or shrubs.
Here's what does work most of the time. It's a multi-pronged approach.
Spray with Bobbex or another deer deterent.
Buy shiny pinwheels at the dollar store and place them near the plants. The motion helps to deter the deer.
Plant strong smelling herbs, or onion and garlic bulbs near the plants that need protection.
Use Irish Spring soap dangling on a string in close proximity to the plants.
Place wind chimes in the garden.
I've tried all of the animal urine products and dog hair, and they do not work!
Fence in the back of your yard to change their pattern of travel.
Plant deer resistant plants and shrubs. Sometimes deer will eat anything out of curiosity. One year they nipped the basil leaves.
Light and water remote sensor systems sometimes scare off the deer (more expensive; I never tried this one).
Sprinkle Milorganite, grey fertilizer, around the perimeter of your property and near the plants.
The Scarecrow idea will probably work if you set it up to rotate or move to startle the deer. I don't think human hair matters.
Here, the deer are so tame that they don't care. Even my dog does not bother them. One time, they were grazing in my back garden. I went close by and yelled and made loud noises, they looked up and continued to feed.
Our property is loaded with nut trees and acorns. I guess my deer have gourmet tastes.
