I don't like self tanners, they look fake, orange, can be messy and difficult to apply properly. The best is natural sun, they say as little as 15 mins a day can improve your skin tone... The best times during the day are the "burning hours" for someone like you since you live in MN. This is between 12 and 4 pm.
If you ARE going to use a tanner, I'd suggest a spray one, not the creams or lotions, its easier to apply evenly. I would spray the lightest layer and if you need more, wait until like the next day maybe to let your skin adjust to it... Lots of people suggest wearing gloves to apply because it can stain your hands more then any other skin on your body.. they can turn out red! Try also testing the tanner in an inconspicuous spot like inside your arm or leg so you can see what it will look like before you decide to do your whole legs and they get messed up!
