Default What is perfume etiquette?

I have a real problem with people who you can smell from across the room. But at the same time, I like smelling nice. I have a friend who works as a Chanel sales rep and she gives me all kinds of free stuff. She's given me bottles of Allure and No.5 and I love wearing them, but I'm afraid to offend. I've tried the technique where you spray a few times in the air and then walk through the mist. A close guy friend told me half an hour later that he couldn't smell it while standing right next to me. It's such expensive stuff that I don't want to spray it if nobody smells it, but I also don't want people to be annoyed because I put too much on. I just started spraying it in my private areas and that seems to be perfect once covered up by underwear and a dress, but I still worry about it being too strong. Any suggestions?
