Does mascara ruin your eyelashes?

I've noticed that ever since I started using mascara my lashed got thinner and less fluffy, and i don't use cheap mascara. So I was wondering if the constant use of mascara does that to your eyelashes. If so, then is there any way to prevent it or help it in any way? .. thanks!

mascara damages your eyelashes if you don't wash it off every night.
