Concealer, depending on where you need it usually should be the same color as your skin. If you use powder or foundation, it should be the exact same color. CoverGirl has a TruBlend system that works pretty effectively and has number coordinating shades. The best way to determine which concealer is finding out how much coverage you actually need and where to apply it. If you are applying it under your eyes to brighten dark circles, then you may either need the same exact shade as your foundation or one a little brighter depending on the severity. If it's for just blemishes, redness, and some hyperpigmentation then I'd recommend the exact same color and the same to do this is go out into the sun the brightest time of day and get out a compact. Take that concealer you have and streak it into a little spot onto your face and determine if it's too pink, beige, darker, lighter. This should effectively determine your color because natural bright sunlight is the best light for makeup application and will do your makeup good in every other lighting and setting there is. If you have redness, yellow based or green concealers may do you some goodness too depending on your skin tone. Never test any type of foundation on your hand because the shade of your hand is usually a completely different shade than your face and neck. Remember that finding a good foundation or concealer will mean it will blend into your jawline and not leave a streak at all. It will 'disappear' into your skin and blend instead of sit atop of it.
