Help! When it comes to cosmetics I'm pretty clueless!

I'm getting married in August and want to do my own makeup but don't want to look ridiculous! I was thinking of going for a slightly smokey eyed effect as it's an evening wedding and my dress is quite simple. What do people think? Is this a good idea, or should I keep to something more natural? I'd like to draw attention to my eyes, and thought the smokey eye effect would be a good move.

I have black hair, fair skin and dark brown eyes.
Also, if I go with smokey eyes, what colours would everyone suggest?
